Beta: works best with clear, flat 2D boards. Photos of real boards are coming next.

What you'll get

A clean 2D board

Every piece recognised and placed on a standard ChessDepth board, whatever the original style.

Coordinates

Files a–h and ranks 1–8, with the board turned the right way round for White and Black.

The FEN

The position in standard notation, ready to copy into Lichess, Chess.com or any chess program.

One-click analysis

Open the position on Lichess or in our board editor to analyse it, play it out or save it for practice.

Example FEN for the position above: r1bqk2r/1pppbppp/p1n2n2/4p3/B3P3/5N2/PPPP1PPP/RNBQ1RK1 w kq - 4 6

How it works

The same steps a strong player does in a second, broken into steps a computer can learn.

  1. 1

    Find the board

Locate the chessboard and its four corners anywhere in the image.

  2. 2

    Straighten it

Correct the angle so the board becomes a flat, top-down square.

  3. 3

    Split into 64 squares

Cut the board into its 8 × 8 squares.

  4. 4

    Recognise the pieces

Decide for every square whether it's empty or holds one of the 12 pieces.

  5. 5

    Check the chess rules

Make sure the position is possible: one king each, no pawns on the back ranks, and so on.

  6. 6

    Draw the result

Show the clean board with coordinates and the FEN, ready to analyse.

Screenshots and diagrams first

This beta reads clear 2D images (websites, apps and book diagrams). Photos of real boards are next.

Your images stay with you

The recognition runs inside your browser, so your pictures are never uploaded anywhere.
